Together with engineer Halcrow, Dissing+Weitling has designed a system of highway bridges, a portal structure and tunnels for the City of Lusail in Qatar. The design concept reflect the contrasts between light and shadow, heat and cold, and thereby simulate the natural surroundings.
Qatar has a harsh environment where people daily move between the sun and the shadow experiencing the change between scorching heat and freezing cold. These conditions, the shadow play and interference is widely used in the architecture in order to generate transitions from one situation to another.
The design concept for Marina Interchange is based on the interference of the light playing in the water - the graduation between light and shadow - and the evaluation of the Lusail City as a growing and ever-changing organism.
