Urban Development

Vitality to an area

Dissing Weitling Cykelslangenogdykker Rasmus Hjortshoj

Dissing+Weitling works on projects involving area allocation, infrastructure and improving urban spaces, and we are specialist experts in developing the physical environment. We move full area projects forward by working with other specialists and we strive to add new value, energy and vitality to the area.

Infrastructure passes across individual cadastre sites, specialist fields, and the public and private sectors, meaning that infrastructure demands a professional approach. What sort of city do we want to live in? At Dissing+Weitling, we work on movement within and between cities and our mobility solutions help shape the physical development of cities and areas.

“Our design springs from the idea of Scandinavian well-being and welfare, and today we’re exporting our expertise in integrated bridge design for people to other parts of the world."

– Steen Savery Trojaborg, Managing Director, Partner and Architect MAA

We have helped Køge Municipality realise their vision for Køge North to promote industry and green mobility. In Copenhagen, the Bicycle Snake is a concrete example how Dissing+Weitling contributes to site-specific urban development. In addition to resolving practical urban challenges, such as when dense traffic meets vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians, the bridge also stimulates activity and life in the urban space.

Modern housing clusters

We believe that architecture and urban planning can promote social community. Our Degnejorden and The Future of Sustainable Social Housing (FBAB) housing projects are examples of modern housing clusters that create new spaces for meetings and for communities. Our area development plan for Degnejorden was inspired by village life, and the houses emerge from around a green 'spinal chord'. There are residences to suit all ages, and space for resident-driven initiatives.

The feeling of being part of a community is also very evident in FBAB, where houses are located in circular structures. This enhances neighbourliness and residents also feel close to nature. Our plan for the projects enables residents to influence life in the area themselves and to establish new communities.

Area development plans

When drawing up area development plans, we work with area allocation, building fields and infrastructure. We recommend that the plan also include a certain degree of flexibility, so that there is room for dialogue with residents, and so that it is possible to adapt to new social and market conditions underway.

We use area development plans as a tool to show the way for overall objectives with the area. These plans can generate a multidisciplinary, inclusive dialogue between the architects, engineers, financial experts, lawyers and anthropologists, so that strategy, physics, finances and time are all accounted for in the project vision and facilitate the best solution for owners and residents.

What we offer

We help municipalities and owners when municipal councils draw up local development plans. We provide guidance for proposals on how the area should be used, what materials should be used, and where roads, buildings and open areas should be located. After political and public consultation, we adjust and finalise the local development plan so that the objectives for development of the district are clear for all parties.
