Skuru Bridge competes against five other bridges in the U.S. and China.
"The slender twin steel box superstructure is supported on Y-shaped piers in a manner “like a waiter carries a tray”
This is the wording of the jury in their evaluation of the Swedish Skuru Bridge, which is competing for the prestigious IABSE Award in the category “Large Road and Railway Bridges.
The elegant and slender design is precisely a key point for Dissing+Weitling, who have endeavored to create a complementary bridge that gracefully complements the existing, older Skuru Bridge, forming a harmonious ensemble rather than drawing undue attention away from it:
- The existing conditions and the landscape meant that we ruled out dominated bridge elements such as pylons and stay cables quite early on. At the same time, we have opted out of designing an arch, even though it might seem like the obvious choice. It would have been a neither economic nor a sensible choice in terms of construction to imitate the old bridges. In addition, it causes some visual confusion when three adjacent arch bridges are seen obliquely from the front. We therefore chose a design that 'converses' with the existing bridges and excluded noisy elements such as grand viewing platforms etc., says Jesper Henriksen, Bridge Architect, Dissing+Weitling.
