Dissing+Weitling was appointed as the architectural adviser to the Oresund Link Consortium, working on the enormous construction to reconcile environmental, landscape, architectural, engineering and aesthetic qualities.
As winners of the initial competition, we was appointed as the architectural adviser to the Oresund Link Consortium. The assignment included architectural coordination of the entire crossing: the design of ramps, tunnel and portal buildings, the artificial island and the toll station, as well as landscape design.
Bridge, artificial island and tunnel
Overall, the Oresund connection consists of four kilometres of lowered tunnel, a four-kilometre-long artificial island and a bridge spanning eight kilometres. The bridge is a slanted bridge with pylons, each measuring 204 metres in height. The bridge is divided into two decks, with the railway on the lower deck and the highway on the top.
The connection has enhanced mobility, trade, commuting and cultural exchange between Copenhagen and Malmö, which before the year 2000 only had minimal contact, despite a straight-line distance of only 30 kilometres between them.
