Åbuen traverses Copenhagen’s Nørrebro (North Bridge) quarter, forging a link with its sister green belt in neighbouring Frederiksberg. It is the first pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Copenhagen to create a major green link neighbourhoods while creating a safe bicycle route from homes to kindergartens and schools.
We aimed for the bridge to become an elegant element in the area – a visible, symbolic presence in the urban landscape in the form of distinctive, architecturally designed cycle bridges.
The link between the two cycle and pedestrian routes traverses the busy Ågade thoroughfare in a graceful arc in both the horizontal and vertical planes, in harmony with the sinuous curves the Green Path carves through the city. Furthermore – the curvy earthwork approach ramp is created as an urban park attracting children and adults.
