The consortium of Dissing+Weitling, WTM Engineers and COWI has won the competition to design the replacement for the Weser Bridge on the A1 motorway near Bremen.
The winning proposal features an elegant and slender prestressed concrete bridge supported by V-shaped piers. The design stands out for its functional clarity while meeting the highest technical and architectural standards.
- Our aim was to create a bridge that resonates with the surrounding landscape—subtle in form, yet distinctive in character. By minimizing structural height and integrating elements such as the noise barrier and cycle path into the overall composition, we achieved a solution that meets the client’s high demands while exemplifying outstanding architectural quality, says Jesper Henriksen, Architect MAA, Head of Mobility at Dissing+Weitling.

The jury recognised the design's harmonious integration into the surroundings, functionality, carefully considered constructability, and convincing integration of the cycle path into the existing road network. The structure’s outstanding cost-effectiveness was also emphasised.
The competition was organised by DEGES. The jury selected the design from five very different entries in the competition.
