Solrød Strand Bathing Pier

Vision for a bathing pier for community, recreation and watersports

Solrød renders small

Through close collaboration with the municipality, local users, and the sea bathing association, we have developed a bathing pier concept that both supports everyday swimming and watersports activities and introduces a new architectural landmark to the coastline—designed for year-round use.

Solrød Municipality is defined by its scenic coastline and a thriving sea bathing community, whose strong local stewardship helps preserve and enhance the beach and its shared facilities.

  • Design developed through collaboration

The vision project has been developed in close collaboration with Solrød Municipality, the Pier Committee, the Sea Bathing Association, the homeowners’ association, and future users. Together, we have sought to create a bathing pier that supports everything from winter swimming and watersports to relaxation and social gathering, while establishing a new landmark on Copenhagen’s southern coastline.

The bathing pier provides a setting for recreation, social gathering, and coastal activities, becoming a destination in its own right.

  • Shaped by the coastal landscape

The pier design is rooted in Solrød’s distinctive coastal landscape. Its form is guided by sightlines from Østre Strandvej and the Beach House, the dune landscape, and the meeting of land and sea, while ensuring that existing vegetation and coastal protection measures are disturbed as little as possible. Conceived as a natural extension of the beach, the pier complements rather than competes with its surroundings.

Connecting Ssghtlines, creating a loop. The connecting sightlines give rise to the pier’s distinctive loop, creating a natural continuation of the journey from the arrival areas to the water. Along its route, a sequence of spaces for swimming, relaxation, and watersports transforms the pier and the beach into one cohesive coastal experience.

  • The Loop

The selected concept, The Loop, extends the lines of the coastal landscape into the water through a simple yet dynamic gesture.

Its generous width accommodates spaces for relaxation, integrated benches with storage, a swimming platform, and a sun deck. The pier is designed to be accessible to everyone, featuring a bathing ramp for people with reduced mobility and provision for a beach wheelchair. A dedicated ramp and floating pontoon also provide easy access for kayakers and windsurfers.

Universal accessibility is ensured through barrier-free access across cast concrete slabs with chamfered edges, allowing comfortable passage for wheelchair users while also accommodating tractors and beach maintenance vehicles.

  • Built for the coastal environment

The pier is supported by a pile foundation engineered to withstand waves, currents, and ice loads. Its open structure allows water to flow freely beneath the deck, reducing the accumulation of seaweed and algal deposits. The pier is constructed from modular elements that can be removed and replaced individually, ensuring straightforward and efficient long-term maintenance.
