Constructed in 1932, the original Sixth Street Viaduct (also known as the Sixth Street Bridge) was an important landmark in the City of Los Angeles. Today a new era for the famous bridge has begone; once again, this bridge has taken its place as one of Los Angeles’ most iconic landmarks connecting the Arts District and Boyle Heights.
The new arch bridge called a “Ribbon of Light” were created out of necessity due to deterioration of the concrete structure.
The iconic structure crosses the Los Angeles River and provides pedestrian and bicycle access, and safer traffic and goods movement.
The spectacular structure comprises ten pairs of arches.
The old bridge, built in 1932, spanned nearly 3,500 feet across the river and has been used to represent Los Angeles in movies, music videos and TV commercials, including riverbed car chases.
The design of the bridge, known as “The Ribbon of Light”, was created by Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan, winner of the City’s international design contest in 2012.
Maltzan is part of the HNTB design team together with AC Martin, Dissing+Weitling and contractors Skanska and Stacy and Witbeck.
