The design for the Mersey Gateway Bridge was selected from a vast number of options, providing maximum benefits for users and having minimal impact on the estuary and its surrounding environment. It provides a much-needed new crossing for the River Mersey near Liverpool, and it is a catalyst for growth in the region. The bridge received the IABSE award for its harmony between design, construction and landscape.
The Mersey Gateway Bridge delivers transport and environmental benefits by reducing travel times and by keeping traffic free-flowing. Cycling and walking routes have also become more user-friendly, and it has improved traffic safety and reduced congestion in Halton and the North West.
