Hameln Pedestrian and Bycycle Bridge

A gentle S-curve across Weser

Visualisering Dissing Weitling

The new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Weser creates a direct and safe connection across the river, strengthening Hameln’s network for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • With its gentle S-curve and simple steel structure, the bridge brings together architecture, traffic safety and efficient use of materials in a single design.

A new line across the Weser

Rather than following the originally planned direct connection towards the intersection of Fischbecker Straße and Fontanestraße, the crossing is shifted further south. From here, the bridge spans the Weser diagonally in a calm, sweeping curve.

The revised alignment creates a more natural connection to the existing cycle network while improving traffic safety. Cyclists are no longer directed towards the heavily trafficked Fischbecker Straße, while the geometry of the bridge naturally helps reduce speed when approaching the crossing.

With a maximum gradient of four per cent, the bridge provides a comfortable and accessible route for both pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Simple structure, long lifespan

The bridge structure is designed with a focus on simplicity, robustness and efficient use of materials. An airtight, welded steel box forms the load-bearing structure while protecting the steel from exposure to the elements.

  • The solution reduces the need for moving parts and ongoing maintenance. It also eliminates the need for conventional corrosion protection, limiting the use of chemical surface treatments close to the Weser. The steel can furthermore be recycled at the end of its service life.

A high degree of prefabrication helps reduce on-site construction time and minimise disruption to the surroundings. Combined with low material consumption, structural simplicity and a long lifespan, this contributes to low life-cycle costs.

  • Part of Hameln’s green mobility network

The bridge improves conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and establishes a more direct connection north of Hameln’s city centre. As part of the city’s Green City Plan, the project supports the ambition to promote sustainable mobility, strengthen the continuity of the cycling network and reduce transport-related emissions.

The project was developed by Dissing+Weitling in collaboration with German engineering firm knippershelbig and was selected as the winning proposal in the 2026 competition for the Nördliche Fuß- und Radwegbrücke über die Weser.
