On April 27, 2022 the longest and the tallest bridge in the Philippines, Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) officially opened to the public. The new bridge improves connectivity and help reduce traffic congestion in Metro Cebu. The bridge is also catalyst for employment for local residents.
The CCLEX serves as an alternate route to and from Mactan Cebu International Airport, cutting the travel time by 40 minutes.
The bridge design
The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway spans 8.5 kilometres, connecting Cordova to Cebu City, the second largest city in the Philippines.
With its monumental scale, the bridge is a local focal point; The link’s 400-metre, cable-stayed main span is supported by two single pylons, rising to a height of 145 metres.
Besides the main span bridge with a 60-metre navigation clearance to allow for shipping, the project includes viaduct approach bridges and a causeway as well as toll-road facilities on an artificial island.
Mangrove protection
An ecosystem of mangrove forests in the area plays a significant role in avoiding storm surge. To protect these forests and provide information to locals and visitors the developer Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC) has built a Mangrove Propagation and Information Center together with the Metro Pacific Investments Foundation (MPIF) and the corporate social responsibility arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC).
